Optimal recovery with instant sugar beet analysis

Profit from more efficient sugar recovery throughout the production process with rapid and practical analysis of all sorts of samples, from brei to finished sugar.

Sugar beet

Accounting for approximately 20% of the world’s sugar production, sugar beet is a vital crop in ensuring the increasing global demand for sugar can be met. It is essential that the beet factory can recover as much sugar from the beet juice as possible, with even a 1% loss in sugar recovery a catastrophe for both profit and use of resources.

To achieve  more efficient and sustainable production, analysis data is essential at all key steps in the process; from intake and diffusion to the pulp press, evaporation and in the sugar house. However, running these tests with current equipment options is time-consuming, it ties-up staff and requires costly chemicals.

A new alternative approach based on infrared analytical technology can drastically decrease the time-to-result, free up laboratory techni¬cians and save on chemical usage, all while getting ICUMSA comparable results. Variations in key parameters such as Pol and Brix can be constantly monitored against targets while others such as colour and purity are delivered simultaneously to provide a more complete assessment of quality. The clean and simple tests take just a few seconds with no or minimal sample preparation.

Rapid analysis with near infrared (NIR) has many benefits. While traditional chemical analysis methods (ICUMSA) can be automated for efficiency and safety in the laboratory, a near infrared (NIR) solution offers an attractive way to speed-up the flow of results dramatically.

Results for multiple parameters of sugar beet are delivered within a minute.
Proven cases show that 1% more recovered sugar can lead to increased revenue of more than 400,000 Euros per year for a typical sugar mill.

Assess the potential of every load

The speed and simplicity of infrared analysis allows incoming beet to be accurately assessed with rapid tests on brei or cossettes. The concept is well proven in other industries.  For instance, instruments such as the FOSS NIRS™ DS3 analyser have become widely established and relied upon in sugar cane processing for controlling incoming cane for sucrose and moisture content at the start of the process. Exactly the same capability is now available to sugar beet millers.

Read this Q and A interview for an in-depth explanation of how near infrared (NIR) analysis works and it’s potential to add value in the sugar beet process.

Max recovery from juice to crystalisation

Why use time and money on complicated testing involving chemicals, when you can get accurate data on pol and brix at the touch of a button?

Test samples such as juice, juice in evaporation and massecuite at regular intervals at no extra cost. For instance, fast analysis of massecuite can provide valuable information to ensure satisfactory crystallization processes with optimal use of resources. In centrifugation, fast and frequent analysis of molasses as well as crystal sugar ensures that centrifuge equipment operates as planned with minimal use of power and resources. All samples can be measured directly without sample preparation.

Throughout the process and in final product checks, the ability to assess colour and purity alongside pol and brix adds an extra dimension to your quality control at no extra cost or time involved.
