At FOSS, innovation isn’t just a value - it’s in our DNA. Our mission to enable more sustainable use of the world’s food resources is shared by more than 300 dedicated R&D professionals located in two global innovation hubs. We develop industry-leading analytical solutions that empower food and agricultural businesses worldwide - and we’re just getting started.
We are looking for a technically skilled and experienced Senior/Principal Scientist specialized in early-stage technology innovation to join our Research and Development department
About the Role
As a Senior/Principal Scientist, you will lead early-stage technology innovation projects, explore new scientific concepts, methods, or technologies and assess their feasibility, typically with a small project team of 1-3 people. This is a science-first role: you'll spend much of your time defining the right questions, designing experiments to answer them, and using the results to decide where a project goes next. You'll work with a degree of autonomy and open-ended problems, occasionally drawing on input from the business unit to keep exploration grounded in real-world relevance. Eventually you will cradle new technologies into development projects. Occasional travel is to be expected to support these activities.
Your Key Responsibilities
• You will define the scientific and technical questions a project needs to answer and design the experimental approach to answer them.
• You will plan, run, and adapt exploratory research work, using results to make clear go/no-go and next-step decisions.
• You will act as a mentor and scientific advisor towards the team.
• You will guide and support the scientists on your project team, and coordinate input from the business unit as needed.
• You will communicate findings, risks, and recommendations clearly to stakeholders and management.
• You will keep track of emerging science and technology relevant to the company's future directions.
What You Bring
• MSc/PhD in Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or a related field.
• Proven experience leading exploratory or early-stage R&D and innovation projects, ideally in a regulated or industry environment.
• Comfortable working with open-ended questions and incomplete information and making sound scientific judgment calls under uncertainty.
• Good communication skills in both Hungarian and English (written and verbal).
Who You Are
You think and lead scientifically first. You are driven by curiosity and rigor, not just delivery targets. You are comfortable with ambiguity and can bring structure to open-ended, exploratory work. You lead small teams with clarity, keeping them focused and motivated even when the path forward isn't fully defined. You communicate findings and recommendations clearly, including non-scientific stakeholders. While scientist first, you keep the big picture in sight and ensure that our innovation projects match customer needs.
Why Join FOSS?
At FOSS, you’ll be part of an international company that is a global leader in analytical solutions for food and agriculture. You’ll work with cutting-edge technologies, dedicated colleagues, and real-world challenges that matter. Expect a collaborative culture grounded in trust, openness, and teamwork - where your ideas are welcomed and your contributions valued.
