Towards a more sustainable beer production

Sustainability is high on the craft brewing agenda and with energy costs breaking the budget, breweries must find ways of reducing their consumption. At the Nordic Craft Beer Forum, the newest sustainability trends were explored, and FOSS demonstrated how analytical solutions help breweries towards a more sustainable beer production.

It is no secret that making beer requires a lot of energy, water, chemicals, and produces a lot of waste. Sustainability is high on the craft beer agenda and with energy costs spiraling out of control, breweries must find ways of reducing their consumption one way or the other.

At the Nordic Craft Beer Forum 2022, the Swedish and Nordic brewing industry gathered to discuss new trends and innovations. Energy efficiency was high on the agenda as many breweries are struggling to keep energy costs down. Some breweries have compressed the brewing time into fewer but longer days, some have installed solar panels to create a more sustainable source of energy, and all breweries are forced to audit their energy consumption more strictly.

Many breweries are paying much more attention to utilities’ hourly rates than previously. Having more processes running during the night, when energy costs are lower, is one way to reduce the energy costs. LED lighting is another place where breweries easily can save money and during the Nordic Craft Beer Forum, energy experts covered even more areas where breweries can save money.

Can the BeerFoss™ FT Go help reduce energy costs?

Speaking with our FOSS Industry Manager in Beer, Marian Reed, there are also areas in which the BeerFoss™️ FT GO can help reduce energy costs at the brewery. “By testing the beer throughout the brewing process, you can see exactly when the beer is finished in the tank. This can save you 3-4 days of tank capacity,” she says and explains how a third of a brewery’s energy costs go towards cellaring and conditioning beer. Reducing the time beer stays in the tanks directly reduces the brewery’s electricity bill, while also allowing additional room to optimize a brewery’s production schedule.

Another way the BeerFoss can help breweries becoming greener is by reducing waste. “By analyzing your beer samples throughout the brewing process, you can make corrections in the fermentation process and make sure the beer turns out as expected. It secures consistency but also prevents breweries from having to make costly adjustments to beers that didn’t turn out as expected.” Marian says.
