Do you share our passion for product development and are you motivated by helping to make the best possible use of the world’s valuable natural resources? To support our future innovation journey at FOSS, we are looking for an experienced mechanical engineer to join the Mechanics, R&D Hardware department. You will help to develop advanced instruments from concept until the release to production and sales. We work in multidisciplinary projects and utilize both our personal and professional strengths to develop our future high-end analytical solutions. We are collaborating in a fast-paced, challenging and fun environment - and to succeed, this requires highly skilled people.

Your future team
The Mechanics, R&D Hardware department is responsible for designing and developing the mechanics and electro-mechanics for our analytical instruments and we have many exciting new projects in the pipeline that require innovative, robust and world-class solutions. We are looking for an experienced and highly skilled mechanical engineer for the mechanics department currently consisting of 23 engineers, technical assistants and student helpers. In this role, you will help to drive the design in our new instrument development projects while continuously developing your competencies within a broad spectrum of areas. You will take ownership of specific mechanical competencies to help us become even better in these areas and to support your colleagues across the projects. The role will give you opportunities for personal development and opportunities to help us strengthen how we design our instruments – something that is key in bringing great solutions to our customers.

The job
The job holds two main tasks. One is being part of building world class instruments for the food and agriculture industry in project teams. We normally work 2-3 mechanical engineers on a multidisciplinary project in collaboration with people from functions like electronics, software, technology, chemicals/bio-chemicals, and data science. The products we build both go into laboratories as well as large plants helping the food and agriculture industry maximize the yield of the world’s valuable natural resources. The second task is taking on responsibility as gatekeeper for one or more specific disciplines like materials, tolerance chains, design reviews, 3D CAD, kinematic, flow systems, etc. This means that there is room for both your personal and professional development, as well as using your skills to guide and review work from other mechanical engineers to secure we jointly bring the most optimal solutions to the market.

To support FOSS’ mechanical engineering function, the department includes a range of supporting functions and facilities: five technical assistants who are supporting on areas such as change order handling, drawings, service manuals, bill of material, a team supporting with FEA simulations, and fantastic tool shop facilities including a CNC machine, a laser cutter and several 3D printers.
Your daily work will be at the FOSS Innovation Centre in Hillerød, Denmark, with 5-10 traveling days per year primarily to our Hungary site, to manufacturing/supplier sites or to customers.

You are structured, get things done, and enjoy having fun with your colleagues
You must love mechanical product development, both theoretical and hands-on tasks, and you are very skilled in what you do. You have a positive mindset even when you are challenged and face tight deadlines. You are familiar in working in a regulated business (food, medical, etc.) and can incorporate external requirements and standards as a natural part of the design process. Our instruments are complex and to reduce risk and complexity as much as possible, you need to be willing to share your work with other engineers and enjoy discussing to reach the optimal solutions. You must be an open person, as we believe the best solutions come from teamwork. People respect you, and like to work with you, because of your strong professional competencies and personal qualities. You possess good communication skills and can communicate complex concepts in a concise manner. You master the art of simplicity, and you promote continuous improvement towards the ways of working.

You hold a degree in mechanical engineering, you are fluent in English and Danish and have minimum 5 years working experience within many of the following areas:

  • Mechanical product design also involving electronics and electro-mechanics.
  • 3D/2D CAD design (we use Autodesk Inventor).
  • Material selection and qualification (metals, glass, thermoplastics and elastomers)
  • Production, service and manufacturing process understanding (DfA, DfM, DfS).
  • Structured problem-solving methods.
  • Designing of robust mechanical solutions (tolerance calculations and robust design principles).
  • Generative design and additive manufacturing methods.
  • User interaction design and human-factor engineering
